1.0 Architecture

Design

  • Three-tier: access, distribution, core. Two-tier: collapsed core/distribution, for one building.
  • Routed access: access switch is the gateway, L3 uplinks, no STP blocking, no FHRP.
  • Align STP root and HSRP active per VLAN.

HA

  • SSO: standby supervisor synchronised, no line card reset. NSF: graceful restart keeps neighbours' routes. Use together.
  • FHRP for router failure; SSO/NSF for supervisor failure.

SD-WAN

  • Manager (vManage) = management. Validator (vBond) = orchestration. Controller (vSmart) = control (OMP). WAN Edge = data (IPsec + BFD).
  • TLOC = system IP + color + encapsulation.
  • OMP route types: OMP routes, TLOC routes, service routes.
  • VPN 0 transport, VPN 512 management.
  • Controllers down: data plane keeps forwarding until OMP graceful restart expires (12 h default).

SD-Access

  • LISP = control plane. VXLAN (GPO) = data plane. TrustSec SGT = policy plane. Catalyst Center + ISE = management.
  • Control plane node: map server/resolver. Edge: endpoints, anycast gateway, registers EIDs. Border: exits fabric. Intermediate: underlay only.
  • Underlay: IS-IS via LAN Automation, jumbo MTU.
  • VN = macro-segmentation (VRF). SGT = micro-segmentation.
  • Fusion router leaks routes between VNs and shared services.

QoS

  • AFxy = 8x + 2y. EF 46, CS3 24, CS6 48, AF41 34, AF31 26, AF21 18, AF11 10.
  • Higher AF drop precedence (y) is dropped first.
  • LLQ (priority) is policed during congestion; excess dropped.
  • bandwidth = minimum guarantee under congestion only.
  • Shaping buffers and is outbound only. Policing drops/re-marks, either direction.
  • Sub-rate circuit: parent shaper + child queuing policy.
  • First matching class wins; match-all is the default.
