ENSLD Design Case Studies

Eight original design case studies written against the ENSLD 300-420 v1.1 exam topics. ENSLD is a design exam with no configuration simulations, so these cases are the closest practice: a company, a current network, requirements and constraints, then design questions where you pick the best option and see why the alternatives fail. None of them reproduce real exam content.

How to use the cases

  1. Read the background, the current network diagram, the requirements and the constraints before you look at any question.
  2. Write down the two or three requirements that will decide between options. Design answers are usually decided by a constraint, not by a feature list.
  3. Answer each question before opening the collapsible answer.
  4. Read the explanation for the wrong options too. The exam writes wrong answers that are good designs for a different set of requirements.
  5. Compare your own design with the recommended design at the end.

Design-exam habits

Ask what fails, how fast it fails over, how the design grows and what it costs to run. The best answer rarely uses the newest technology; it meets the stated requirements with the least extra risk.

The eight cases

Case Title Blueprint Difficulty
01 Addressing plan and IPv6 migration 1.1, 1.6 Medium
02 Multi-area routing and BGP edge design 1.2, 1.4, 1.5 Hard
03 Campus high availability and Layer 2 design 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 Medium
04 SD-Access migration 2.4, 2.5 Hard
05 WAN and VPN selection with high availability 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.3 Medium
06 SD-WAN design 3.4, 3.5 Hard
07 QoS and multicast for a media company 4.1, 4.2, 4.4, 4.5 Hard
08 Automation, telemetry and cloud connectivity 5.1 to 5.6 Medium
