Automation Practice Questions

15 original scenario-style questions covering ENSLD 5.1 to 5.6. Answer every one before opening any explanation. Target: 12 of 15 (80%).

1. A service provider-style team must run one automation code base that sets interface and BGP parameters on routers from three vendors. Which YANG model set should be the first choice? Blueprint 5.1

  • A. Cisco native models
  • B. Cisco operational (-oper) models
  • C. OpenConfig models
  • D. Models written separately by each vendor
Answer: C

OpenConfig is operator driven and designed for multi-vendor use, with good coverage of interfaces and BGP. Cisco native (A) and vendor models (D) are not portable. Operational models (B) are read-only state and cannot configure anything.

2. A design must automate a Cisco-specific feature that has no IETF or OpenConfig model. What is the correct approach? Blueprint 5.1

  • A. Skip automation for that feature
  • B. Wait for the IETF to publish a model
  • C. Use the Cisco native model for that feature and keep standard models for the rest
  • D. Replace the device with one supported by OpenConfig
Answer: C

A hybrid is the normal answer. Cisco native covers nearly everything on the platform, and standard models are used where they exist. The other options either leave work manual or are disproportionate.

3. Which statement about YANG is correct? Blueprint 5.1

  • A. YANG is the protocol that carries configuration to a device
  • B. YANG is an encoding format similar to JSON
  • C. YANG models can only be used with NETCONF
  • D. YANG defines the structure and data types of configuration and state, independent of the protocol and encoding
Answer: D

YANG is a modeling language. The protocols (NETCONF, RESTCONF, gNMI) carry data that follows a model, and the encodings are XML, JSON or protobuf. A and B confuse it with a protocol and an encoding. C is wrong because RESTCONF and gNMI also use YANG models.

4. An orchestrator must change a VRF, an interface and a BGP neighbour as one unit and revert automatically if the device becomes unreachable. Which choice fits? Blueprint 5.2

  • A. SNMP set
  • B. NETCONF using the candidate datastore with a confirmed commit
  • C. gNMI Subscribe
  • D. RESTCONF with PATCH
Answer: B

NETCONF can stage changes in a candidate datastore, validate them and commit with a timer that rolls back if the commit is not confirmed. RESTCONF applies each request immediately and has no candidate datastore. gNMI Subscribe is for telemetry. SNMP set offers no transaction semantics.

5. A team builds a web portal that lets staff change one setting on a device using JSON over standard web infrastructure. Which protocol fits best? Blueprint 5.2

  • A. NETCONF over SSH
  • B. gNMI dial-out
  • C. RESTCONF
  • D. SNMPv3
Answer: C

RESTCONF maps operations to HTTP methods over HTTPS with JSON encoding, which suits web applications. NETCONF supports XML only and needs an SSH session. gNMI dial-out is for streaming telemetry.
